About This Penn State GPA Calculator
The Penn State GPA Calculator uses the official Penn State University Park grading scale as defined by the PSU Academic Policies. Unlike many universities, Penn State's scale has some unique characteristics: there is no A+ grade (A at 4.0 is the highest), and the D range collapses to a single D (1.0) — there are no D+ or D- grades.
Penn State University Park operates on a semester system — Fall and Spring semesters, with a Summer session. Undergraduate students are typically enrolled in 15–18 credit hours per semester. Full-time status requires at least 12 credit hours.
This calculator helps PSU students track their academic progress, check Dean's List eligibility, and plan how their current semester will affect their cumulative GPA.
How GPA Is Calculated at Penn State
Penn State GPA is calculated using the standard weighted average formula:
- Quality Points = Letter Grade value × Credit Hours for each course
- Semester GPA = Total Quality Points ÷ Total Credit Hours for the semester
- Cumulative GPA = (Previous Quality Points + Current Quality Points) ÷ (Previous Credits + Current Credits)
Where Previous Quality Points = Previous Cumulative GPA × Previous Total Credits.
Only letter-graded courses are included in GPA calculation. Courses graded S/U (Satisfactory/Unsatisfactory) or deferred grades do not factor into the GPA.

Dean's List requires full-time enrollment (12+ credits) and a minimum semester GPA of 3.50.
Penn State Dean's List Requirements
The Penn State Dean's List is one of the most recognized academic honors at University Park. To qualify for Dean's List recognition each semester, you must meet all of the following criteria:
- Semester GPA of 3.50 or higher — a single semester of strong performance qualifies you, regardless of your cumulative GPA.
- Full-time enrollment — you must be enrolled in at least 12 credit hours during the semester.
- No incomplete or deferred grades — all courses must have final grades assigned before Dean's List is determined.
- No course failures — receiving an F grade in any course during the semester typically disqualifies you.
Dean's List designation appears on your official Penn State transcript and is recognized at graduation. Each Penn State college (Smeal, IST, Engineering, Liberal Arts, etc.) publishes its own Dean's List at the end of each semester.
Penn State Graduation Honors (Latin Honors)
In addition to the semester Dean's List, Penn State awards graduation honors based on cumulative GPA. These appear on your diploma and transcript:
- With Distinction (Cum Laude): Cumulative GPA of 3.40–3.59
- With High Distinction (Magna Cum Laude): Cumulative GPA of 3.60–3.79
- With Highest Distinction (Summa Cum Laude): Cumulative GPA of 3.80 or higher
Note: Graduation honors at PSU are based on your cumulative GPA at graduation. Transfer credits are included in total credits earned but PSU calculates honors based on the overall GPA including transferred grades where applicable — check with your adviser for the exact policy for your college.

- →If you have an incomplete (I) grade, it must be resolved before the semester GPA can be finalized for Dean's List consideration.
- →Penn State's LionPATH system shows your official GPA — use this calculator for planning and scenario modeling.
