What Are Credit Hours?

Credit hours show the academic weight of a course. A course with more credit hours has a greater effect on GPA than a course with fewer credit hours. For example, a four-credit course affects the final semester GPA more than a one-credit course when different grades are earned.

When using the Mizzou GPA Calculator, enter the exact credit hours listed for each course. Incorrect credit hours can produce an inaccurate GPA estimate.

Semester GPA vs. Cumulative GPA

Semester GPA measures academic performance during one term. It is calculated from the GPA-eligible courses, grades, and credit hours completed in that semester.

Cumulative GPA combines eligible coursework from multiple terms. To estimate an updated cumulative GPA, enter your current cumulative GPA, previously attempted GPA credit hours, and anticipated grades for the current semester.

Semester GPA is useful for reviewing recent performance, while cumulative GPA provides a broader view of academic progress. The official cumulative GPA is recorded by the University of Missouri and can be checked through the student’s transcript or academic profile in myZou.

Which Grades Count Toward a Mizzou GPA?

Mizzou uses an A–F grading system with plus and minus grades. Both A+ and A carry 4.00 grade points. Other grades include A- at 3.70, B+ at 3.30, B at 3.00, B- at 2.70, and corresponding values through F at 0.00.

The grade-point value for each course is multiplied by its credit hours. The resulting quality points from all GPA-eligible courses are added together and divided by the total GPA credit hours attempted.

Grades such as S, U, H, W, NR, and I are not included when Mizzou calculates GPA. Students should enter only GPA-eligible letter grades when estimating semester or cumulative results.

How to Test Different Grade Scenarios

Mizzou uses the terms Academic Notice, Academic Warning, and Academic Dismissal when students do not meet the applicable academic-standing requirements. Students concerned about their standing should review their academic profile and speak with an academic adviser.

Course Repeats and GPA Estimates

How to plan MIZZOU GPA for the upcoming/next semester?

You can not only use Mizzou gpa calculator to check your current semester’s result but you can also estimate how different grades in future can effect your GPA and cumulative GPA.

In University of Missouri,GPA is calculated on the basis of credit hours; courses with more credit hours have more effect on the final result as compared to courses with comparatively lesser credit hours which means not every course has the same/equal effect on the GPA.

Why doesn’t the cumulative GPA increase faster in one semester?

Your cumulative GPA is the combined outcome of all eligible classes at University of Missouri.The more credit hours you have  already completed, the harder it is to change the cumulative GPA.

Let's say a student who has a 3.00 GPA after completing 60 credit hours ends up getting straight A's in their next 15 credit hours’ semester pulling off a perfect 4.0 GPA which will increase the average cumulative GPA to 3.2.

This doesn't mean those straight A's went to waste but you're adding up  15 new credit hours into 60 previously completed credit hours. 

That's why a freshman with no completed credit hours can increase their GPA in a single term, but once you get into senior year, that number gets pretty stubborn to change.

Which course has the most effect on the grade GPA?

Courses’ credit hours suggest how a 4 credit hours course has more weightage on academic effect on final GPA then 1 hour credit hour course.

Boosting a grade from a C to a B in a four-credit course gets you four extra quality points, whereas that same improvement in a one-credit course only adds one.

When mapping out target grades, focus on courses with more credit hours courses but that does not mean lesser credit hours courses should be ignored as every eligible course contributes to the overall grade.

It should also be kept in mind that Mizzou uses a standard plus/minus system where both an A and an A+ equal to a 4.00, an A’s value drops to 3.70,  a B+ has the value 3.30 and a B has the value of 3.00. That's why choosing an  A+ won't push your GPA past a perfect 4.0.

How much GPA do I need this  semester?

Estimating a target GPA requires knowing where you stand:based on your current cumulative GPA, your completed credit hours, and how many credits you're taking in the next term.

Let's say you're sitting on a 3.20 cumulative GPA after 60 completed credit  hours and want to increase  that up to a 3.30 over a 15 credit hours semester,you'd need to pull roughly a 3.70 GPA in the upcoming  term average to make that work.

The easiest way to estimate your cumulative GPA is to  play around with combinations in the calculator by first entering expected grades for all courses and then changing one or two grades to see how close the result comes to the target. This might help in course planning but it doesn't guarantee any final result.

What checks should be made on mizzou before using it's calculator ?

To get an accurate cumulative GPA estimate, avoid guessing your current details. Instead, what you can do is check your current cumulative GPA and completed GPA credit hours directly on mizzou or your unofficial transcript.

Relying solely on your total degree credit hours can cause a throw off to your GPA. Some courses grant credit toward your degree, but they don't actually factor into your GPA calculation.

According to University of Missouri advising guidelines, your official UM cumulative GPA only includes coursework taken directly at UM. Transfer credits, repeated classes, and other special transcript scenarios should be confirmed with your academic advisor or the MU Registrar.

If you plug incorrect credit hours alongside your previous GPA into a calculator, your final cumulative result will be wrong—even if every single grade for the current semester is entered perfectly.

Why can the calculator's result be different from Mizzou?

Mizzou GPA calculator only provides the estimate while the actual GPA is displayed on mizzou and the official university transcript.

A few common reasons your calculation might not match your official transcript:

●        Entering your incorrect starting cgpa/credit hours.

●       Selecting wrong course credits.

●       Misreading non-grade notations such as “pass/fail” or “drop” codes (S/U/W/I).  Retaken Classes: Missing the official GPA adjustment policies for repeated courses.

●        An instructor updating a grade after the fact.

●         Accidentally leaving a class out of your list.

●        Small discrepancies in how and when rounding gets applied.

Mizzou’s official GPA calculation divides total grade points by total attempted GPA credit hours. In addition to that, the official registrar provides estimates for projected results and GPA calculator for current GPA.

Can a S/U course improve GPA?

At Mizzou, an ‘S’ (Satisfactory) grade will not affect your GPA. While you would receive credit hours for successfully completing a class, no grade points are assigned, and your GPA is calculated based on grade points.

While this may sound like a smart way to protect your GPA, you shouldn’t consider changing your courses to S/U as a means of doing so, since Mizzou has several restrictions in place regarding S/U grades. There are limits to how many courses can be taken on an S/U basis, depending on your program or grade. Additionally, taking courses on an S/U basis can potentially impact your ability to graduate with honors. Students who are in their first semester of freshman year or currently on academic probation must also be especially careful.

You should consult with your advisor before changing any courses to an S/U grading scheme to ensure you understand the impact it will have on your degree plan.

Does repeating a course automatically remove your old grade?

No. Simply retaking a class does not mean that a basic calculator will automatically adjust the GPA calculation for you. The University of Missouri has a policy and process around repeating classes and adjusting GPAs.

While the repeated course may still appear on your academic record, the impact an approved grade adjustment would have on your GPA at the University of Missouri, is different than what may be expected.

If you are considering inputting an adjusted value into a calculator for GPA estimation, it is best to understand that the number would only represent an approximate value of your GPA at the University of Missouri.

Once you've done that, try using this calculator to model three different scenarios:

Realistic

- what GPA you're realistically likely to receive

Best case scenario

- what your GPA would be if you earned a higher grade in one or more classes

Worst case scenario

- what your GPA would be if you earned a lower grade in one or more classes
