About Tip Calculator
Our Tip Calculator makes splitting restaurant bills effortless. Choose a tip percentage or enter a custom amount, split between any number of people, and see exactly what everyone owes including tax. Includes round-up toggle and a service quality guide.
How Tip Calculator Works
The Tip Calculator computes the tip amount, total bill with tip, and per-person share for any combination of bill amount, tip percentage, and party size. The tip amount is calculated as bill × (tip percentage ÷ 100). The total bill is the original bill amount plus the tip. When splitting, the per-person amount is the total divided by the number of people. The Round Up option rounds each person's share to the nearest whole dollar, which generates a slightly higher total tip — the calculator shows exactly how much extra the rounding contributes so the group can decide if they want to leave the extra for the server. Custom tip percentages allow you to enter any value, not just the preset buttons. The calculator also shows the effective overall percentage when rounding is applied. All calculations update in real time as you change any input, so you can compare different tip scenarios instantly.
Tip Amount = Bill × (Tip % ÷ 100)
Total = Bill + Tip Amount
Per Person = Total ÷ Number of People
Rounded Per Person = ⌈Per Person⌉ (ceiling to nearest dollar)Reference Data

Limitations & Practical Tips
Known Limitations
- •Tipping customs vary significantly by country — in Japan and parts of East Asia, tipping can be considered rude; in Australia, it is appreciated but not expected. This guide reflects US conventions.
- •Some restaurants automatically add a service charge (often 18–20%) for large parties — always check your bill before adding a second tip on top of an included gratuity.
- •The round-up option always rounds up to the nearest dollar per person. For a party of 3 where the exact share is $21.33, rounding up means each person pays $22 — confirm everyone is happy with this before paying.
Tips for Best Results
- →In the US, a quick mental math trick: find 10% of the bill (move the decimal one place left), then add half of that for 15%, or double it for 20%.
- →If you are unsure whether a service charge has been included, look for "Gratuity", "Service", or "Svc" lines on the bill before adding a tip.
- →For large groups at a restaurant, it is common courtesy to tip toward the higher end of the range (20–25%) since large parties create more work for the server.
Frequently Asked Questions
- How much should you tip at a restaurant?
Standard tipping etiquette in the US: 15% for average service, 18–20% for good service, and 25% or more for exceptional service. 10% is generally considered the minimum for adequate service. The Tip Calculator's quality guide shows these ranges visually.
- How do I split a bill between multiple people?
Enter the total bill amount, select your tip percentage, then use the +/− buttons to set the number of people. The calculator instantly shows the per-person amount including their share of the tip.
- What does the "round up" option do?
Rounding up sets each person's share to the next whole dollar amount. This makes it easier to split the bill with cash and results in a slightly higher tip for the server. The calculator shows exactly how much extra tip the rounding generates.
- Does the tip calculator include tax?
The calculator works on whatever bill amount you enter. If your bill already includes tax, enter the post-tax total and the tip is calculated on that. If you want to tip on the pre-tax amount, enter just the pre-tax subtotal.
- Should you tip on the pre-tax or post-tax amount?
The etiquette varies. Most servers prefer you tip on the post-tax total (the final bill amount) as it results in a slightly higher tip. However, tipping on the pre-tax subtotal is also acceptable and is what some tipping guides recommend. The difference is usually only a dollar or two.
- What is a fair tip for food delivery?
For restaurant delivery, 10–15% of the order total is standard, with a $3 minimum. For difficult deliveries (long distance, bad weather, stairs, large orders), tip 20% or more. Note that many delivery apps keep service fees separate from driver tips — always confirm that your tip goes directly to the driver.
- Is tipping mandatory?
In the US, tipping in restaurants is a strong social norm but technically voluntary. In some countries (Japan, South Korea, parts of Europe), tipping is not expected and may even be considered rude. When travelling internationally, research the local tipping customs for the country you are visiting.
