Pool Volume Formulas by Shape
Pool volume is calculated as the pool's surface area multiplied by its average depth, then converted to gallons or liters:
- Rectangular/Square: Volume = Length × Width × Average Depth
- Round: Volume = π × (Diameter/2)² × Average Depth
- Oval: Volume = π × (Length/2) × (Width/2) × Average Depth (ellipse area formula)
- Kidney-Shaped: Volume ≈ 0.75 × Average of the two lengths × Width × Average Depth (a standard industry approximation, since kidney pools don't have one exact geometric formula)
The average depth for a sloped pool is (shallow-end depth + deep-end depth) ÷ 2. Once the volume is known in cubic feet or cubic meters, it's converted using 7.48052 US gallons per cubic foot (or 264.172 US gallons per cubic meter), 1000 liters per cubic meter, and 0.832674 to convert US gallons to Imperial (UK) gallons.
