About This Mixed Fraction Calculator
A mixed number (or mixed fraction) combines a whole number with a proper fraction, such as 2 3/4 or 5 1/2. Mixed numbers are common in cooking measurements, construction and woodworking (feet and inches, board lengths), and everyday math problems, but doing arithmetic with them by hand requires converting to improper fractions first, finding a common denominator, and simplifying the result.
This calculator automates that entire process. It converts each mixed number to an improper fraction, performs the requested operation, and simplifies the answer back down using the greatest common divisor (GCD) — then converts it back to a mixed number for easy reading, while also showing the improper fraction and decimal forms.
How Mixed Fraction Arithmetic Works
Every mixed number W N/D converts to an improper fraction as:
- Improper numerator = W × D + N
- Improper denominator = D
Once both mixed numbers are improper fractions (a/b and c/d), the four operations are:
- Addition: (a×d + c×b) / (b×d)
- Subtraction: (a×d − c×b) / (b×d)
- Multiplication: (a×c) / (b×d)
- Division: (a×d) / (b×c)
The result is then simplified by dividing both the numerator and denominator by their greatest common divisor (GCD), and converted back into a mixed number by taking the integer quotient as the whole number and the remainder as the new numerator.
Worked Example
- 2 1/3 + 1 3/4 → improper fractions: 7/3 + 7/4
- Common denominator: 28/12 + 21/12 = 49/12
- Simplify and convert back: 49/12 = 4 1/12
Result: 2 1/3 + 1 3/4 = 4 1/12 (≈ 4.0833)
Mixed Numbers vs. Improper Fractions
A mixed number like 3 1/2 and an improper fraction like 7/2 represent the exact same value — they're just written differently. Mixed numbers are usually easier to read and picture ("three and a half"), while improper fractions are easier to add, subtract, multiply, and divide, since they only require one number on top and one on the bottom.
